Selecting a compact crossover is not easy, especially when models like the 2020 Mazda CX-5 keep getting better and better. But price plays a key role for many buyers, and at nearly $40,000 as tested, the CX-5 Signature comes in at the higher end of the spectrum.
The CX-5 is a solidly built compact crossover with a stylish if understated exterior and a refined, elegant interior, where the finishes set the CX-5 apart from the competition, with soft touches and well-placed controls. The 2.5-liter turbo and 227 horses bring plenty of pep to the party, and the six-speed auto meters smoothly through acceleration. I appreciate the wide visibility, and the heated and cooled seats are welcome in this class of vehicle.
If you’re a fan of touchscreens in your infotainment, Mazda is not the brand for you. Instead, there’s a center-console rotary knob, and I’m not a fan. Sometimes it’s just faster to touch the darn screen! Tech issues aside, there’s a terrific interior room in the CX-5, and flexible seating allows for plenty of cargo and people.
Competition is stiff in this segment so shop around. The CX-5 is a worthy entry but compare features and pricing carefully.
