I really enjoyed driving the 2020 Subaru Outback, and two million buyers do, too. This sixth-generation five-passenger crossover does a lot of things well, including moderately vigorous off-roading while maintaining good manners on road. It’s fun to drive and provides a solid sense of security.
The all-new suspension offers confidence in turns and under hard braking while the dual-function X-MODE with hill descent gives the Outback a Jeep-like surefootedness.
The Outback uses the 2.4-liter turbocharged engine also available in the larger Ascent SUV, or the 2.5-liter normally aspirated engine powering most of Subaru's lineup. Both engines pair with a well-behaved continuously variable transmission and Subaru's legendary symmetrical all-wheel-drive.
Styling is understated with rough and ready cladding adding character. The interior features a large screen and easy interface with Android Auto and Apple CarPlay supported. The seats are comfortable for long drives, while visibility is very good, helping to navigate narrow trails. There’s plenty of safety features standard, too.
A hands-free power rear liftgate is offered and the Onxy Edition XT ($34,895) has water-repellent upholstery, great for pets, kids, and water sports.
Spring for the Touring XT ($39,695) for ventilated seats and DriverFocus™ Distraction Mitigation System, or more budget-friendly Limited ($33,445).
