The 2020 Honda CR-V is a mainstay in the automotive market for a good reason: it’s durable, reliable, and ownership is generally drama free. The addition of a hybrid version only adds to the appeal. Or does it?

I enjoyed the hybrid CR-V overall, but the high-pitched, ghostly-sounding Acoustic Vehicle Alert System (AVAS), designed to alert pedestrians to an otherwise silent vehicle, was so loud, said pedestrians often stopped to ask what was wrong with the car. AVAS should fade at about 20MPH, but it was on all the time and tainted the driving experience for me. Word is Honda’s fixed the AVAS, but definitely listen for it on a test drive.

Besides the haunting whine, the CR-V is terrific. Great utility, Honda Sensing safety and AWD standard, a comfortable cabin, available Apple CarPlay/Android Auto, excellent visibility, and easy ingress/egress all make for an enjoyable ride. The infotainment system is cranky, and please install a radio tuning button, but I did get 35 MPG, a tad below the 38 MPG combined estimate but pretty darn good.

The midsize crossover space is crowded so shopping around makes sense. Keep the CR-V hybrid on your list; just listen for the AVAS.
