Ingress and egress are effortless, even for my petite stature, and finding a comfortable seating position is straightforward. Large windows afford broad visibility with the drive height benefiting from nearly 9” of ground clearance.
Quality materials grace the Subaru Ascent’s cabin with the chocolate exterior and vanilla interior a delicious if impractical choice for a family or wearer of dark denim. The doors thunk when closing, and switches and levers are weighty. Cargo room is plentiful even with all the seats up.
On the road, the Subaru Ascent is a durable, well-balanced vehicle, with a sure-footed feel thanks in part to standard AWD and a quiet, well-insulated cabin. Road noise is kept to a minimum, even riding on 20” tires. The CVT engine complains on aggressive uphills and can shift too much on the descent, but overall acceleration is excellent for entering the highway or popping away from a stoplight.

The 2019 Buick Regal GS is a bit like Duke basketball sensation Zion Williamson: game changing nimbleness and capability in an unexpected package. Williamson looks like a football player but moves like a ballerina. The Regal looks like a four-door sedan, but its AWD and clever sportback hides capabilities of an SUV. With sleek lines and a motivated 3.6-liter V6, the Regal GS cuts through traffic like Williamson cuts through the paint.
The Regal GS has rear-wheel-drive inspired proportions, and its broad stance is head turning. Many are still surprised and delighted to find it's a Buick. The appealing styling overshadows the interior, which deserves more upgraded materials and less hard plastic. The GS-exclusive massaging, heating, and cooling seats are a high point, with racing-style bolstering and lumbar support for long drives or conquering the twisties. Android Auto AND Apple CarPlay work seamlessly, and the head’s up display provides helpful information.
SUVs dominate today’s market, but the Regal GS with AWD is a legitimate alternative and a whole lot more fun to drive than nearly any SUV around. The GS is jam-packed with options at a great value. It’s (March) madness to not consider purchasing one.
