My personal vehicle is a 2015 Buick Encore named Coco, a good, solid, small crossover. While Coco can be a bit on the wee side at times, the next up Buick Envision is too big. Enter the 2020 Buick Encore GX, the Goldilocks of Buick crossovers.

The Encore GX is just the right size for five passengers, with plenty of shoulder room in front, a roomy second row, and oodles of cargo space in back wrapped in an appealing, muscular exterior. The 1.3-liter turbo CVT FWD is the ideal engine to power the GX, with 155 horses making short work of highway mergers. AWD requires upgrading to a nine-speed auto but all trims have a six-feature driver assist package standard.

The interior is nicely appointed, especially in the top “Essence” trim, where heated seats and steering wheel are standard, but ventilated seats are sadly not available. The GX is delightfully quiet with minimal road noise. The infotainment system integrated seamlessly with my Android, and the cabin ergonomics were easy and intuitive. The only wrinkle was a long reach for the “hazards” button.

If you’re in the market for a right-sized crossover, do put the Encore GX on your list.
