Honda’s 2020 CR-V is well-built, well-designed, and as familiar as a good friend. The latest CR-V, with updated exterior styling, has a 1.5-liter engine standard with advanced driver safety features.

Driving the Honda CR-V showcases that powerplant with zippy acceleration and sporty handling pairing well with a composed ride, although the CVT transmission whines slightly at full throttle. The seating position is high with easy ingress and egress, and the large windows offer excellent visibility.  There’s plenty of room for five and thoughtful interior storage includes a handy optional charging pad and well-placed USB ports.

Materials in the CR-V are durable but tend toward hard, molded plastics and matte finishes, particularly in black. The interior lacks a premium feel we see from competitors such as the Mazda CX-30. I don’t love the angled position of the gear selector and the infotainment system is maddeningly missing a simple tuning knob, but it’s not a barrier to purchase.

The CR-V offers a copious, square cargo area, particularly with the second row folded flat, with room for luggage, sporting equipment, or flea market finds. Honda sells over 375,000 CR-Vs every year because it’s just a good, solid vehicle.
