The 2020 Mazda CX-30 is a five-seat, subcompact crossover based on the very popular Mazda3. The CX-30 slots above the CX-3 and below the CX-5 (see chart). It’s great for singles and smaller households.

The CX-30 comes with a 186-horsepower 2.5-liter 4-cylinder engine paired with a six-speed automatic. Sport mode is available, but it doesn’t do much frankly. Front-wheel-drive is standard with all-wheel-drive a worthwhile upgrade.

Mazda’s focus on upgraded interiors is on fine display in the CX-30, with comfortable leather seats, a well-appointed dash, an excellent head-up display and a power rear liftgate standard in the fully-loaded Premium. But if you’re a touchscreen fan, the CX-30 is not for you: the 8.8” infotainment screen’s strictly controlled by the large center console knob and switches.

The CUV is one of the most refined in its class, with a quiet, confident ride and a sure-footed, weighty driving impression. The brake travel is longer than expected so takes some getting used to, the only wrinkle in an otherwise excellent experience. My passenger frequently commented how comfortable the ride was, including the lack of body roll and sway.

The CX-30 is a good, solid all-around runabout worthy of any compact crossover shopping list.
