The 2020 Toyota CH-R is a fun, small urban runabout. Its styling is distinctive in a class of understated design. The CH-R is the kind of car that turns heads and elicits smiles from passers-by. It's fun to drive, especially in more crowded environments, which are more likely to hide the CVT's complaining under heavy acceleration.

The interior is pleasing and functional, with a nice weight to the center-console gear selector and on-trend piano-black accents in the Limited providing style without expense. The large screen offers Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, almost a necessity given the limited built-in tech.

Once on the road, the 2.0-liter 4-cylinder with 144 horsepower powers the CH-R through the turns, but it doesn't love full acceleration. The CVT whines loudly up hills, and the noise intrudes into the cabin. The engine settles down on flat surfaces and isn’t a barrier to purchase.

It’s fuel-efficient (I got 31 MPG as advertised), but AWD is not an option, so it’s best-suited for warmer climes or pick up a set of snow tires.

Toyota describes the CH-R as “Put a spotlight on your arrival,” and in a world of bland crossovers, the CH-R certainly does that.
