Ingress and egress are effortless, even for my petite stature, and finding a comfortable seating position is straightforward. Large windows afford broad visibility with the drive height benefiting from nearly 9” of ground clearance.
Quality materials grace the Subaru Ascent’s cabin with the chocolate exterior and vanilla interior a delicious if impractical choice for a family or wearer of dark denim. The doors thunk when closing, and switches and levers are weighty. Cargo room is plentiful even with all the seats up.
On the road, the Subaru Ascent is a durable, well-balanced vehicle, with a sure-footed feel thanks in part to standard AWD and a quiet, well-insulated cabin. Road noise is kept to a minimum, even riding on 20” tires. The CVT engine complains on aggressive uphills and can shift too much on the descent, but overall acceleration is excellent for entering the highway or popping away from a stoplight.

A gorgeous Plasma Yellow Pearl 2021 Subaru Crosstrek glows in the evening lights. The color is more margarita lime than yellow, but it’s delicious. The four-door, five-passenger compact Crosstrek is all-new, with refreshed yet familiar styling, two engine choices, and four trim lines.
Crosstrek has Subaru’s celebrated Symmetrical All-Wheel-Drive, 1,500 pounds of towing, and 8.7” of ground clearance. The Sport and Limited (which I drove) has an all-new 182-horsepower 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine mated to a perfectly modulated CVT. A 2.0-liter with a six-speed manual powers the base and premium trim.
Athletic refinement oozes from the Crosstrek, with body-colored detailing on the steering wheel and handy power leather seats in the stylish cabin. The Sport version provides a vegan option with fabric free of animal content. Visibility is excellent thanks to tall windows, a wide windscreen, and a slim “A” pillar.
The Limited is responsive and planted through rolling Virginia hills and soft off-roading, with enough power to please and still achieve over 26 MPG in aggressive driving. Braking was straight and solid under pressure, even on gravel.
The 2021 Crosstrek offers accessories for a variety of lifestyles, so order some margaritas and check it out. Just don’t drink and drive.
