In a sea of SUVs, the 2020 AMG GLC43 still turns heads. Perhaps it is the gorgeous cardinal red metallic paint or enormous, unmistakable Mercedes logo on the front. Either way, clean up and prepare for admiring glances.

The GLC43 is stately athletic luxury, the AMG-enhanced growling engine sprinting onto highways with ease (4.7-second 0-60) and muscling through turns with satisfying elegance. My test vehicle had 21” tires but road noise was minimal with available $150 heat and noise insulating glass.

Easily adjustable drive modes and AWD provide plenty of traction in slippery conditions, or even more power and tighter steering as desired. In default Comfort mode, the accelerator was a bit grabby as it shifted through the 9 speeds, a minor wrinkle smoothed out in Sport and Sport+ mode. The “individual” mode provides full customization.

When optioning out your GLC43, spring for the $1,250 Multimedia Package for enhanced navigation and real-time live video, which would benefit from head up display. Android Auto/Apple CarPlay are available, but save for some confusing icons, I preferred the built-in infotainment and nav system.

With its roomy, tech-inspired interior and good-looking exterior, the GLC43 is worth a shower, shave, and test drive.
