Any vehicle with inch-thick books written about it is iconic. The 2020 Land Rover Defender is such a vehicle. Does this long-awaited new version live up to the hype and heritage? I’m heading to the Land Rover Experience (“LRE”) Center in Manchester, VT, to find out.

The three ride heights come in handy as I climb in via “Access” level. My 5-seat (sans optional jumpseat sadly) Tasmin Blue “SE” Defender slots in third of six trims. The interior reads “active off-roading,” replete with leather/cloth climate-controlled seats and discreetly multi-functional center console controls. Bump to the “X” top trim for full-on interior luxury.

Aerodynamic design and refinement on the highway are noteworthy, with fantastic power from the inline-six mild hybrid. Transitioning seamlessly to the LRE, the “capability” and “durability” part of the Defender story awakens off-road. The 10” infotainment screen becomes three multi-functional cameras, and Auto Terrain Response activates through the HVAC controls. The Defender climbs up and down steep, muddy terrain on its own with sophisticated style, or I can do the maneuvering with admittedly less finesse.

The 2020 Land Rover Defender goes from tarmac to trail with aplomb and should go from the showroom to your driveway, too.
