What does a postman, a neighbor, and a lovely stranger at the grocery store have in common? An appreciation for the redesigned 2021 Kia K5 (nee Optima), which garnered plenty of double-takes on Greenwich's roads from the trio mentioned above and a variety of townspeople.

Long, sleek lines, sharp, angular headlamps, and exaggerated rear taillights enhance the K5. A high beltline and dramatically sloping back add to the drama. Initial concerns about visibility out the rakishly cut rear window proved false, even with rear-seat passengers. Frontward, the windscreen is broad and mirrors well positioned for maximum viewing.

The GT-Line interior (not to be confused with the GT version) evokes sporty luxury, with high-quality synthetic leather heated seats and judicious use of smooth and textured metals. The 8" touchscreen is blessedly intuitive, and Android Auto (with Apple CarPlay available) and wireless charging worked seamlessly.

The K5 is more than just a looker: it's got a great personality, too, especially in Sport mode. The 1.6L turbo 4-cylinder with 180 horsepower is delighted to zoom ahead, with taut steering and sharp, responsive brakes. My only wrinkle was a desire for a throatier, richer exhaust note, a minor complaint in an otherwise fabulous experience.
