I’m on a road trip with 4 kids aged 8-14. I scheduled a minivan but the 2020 Infiniti Q50 arrived instead. Plan B means only 3 kids ride with me on this two-day journey as the rear seat proves too cozy for more. (The four kids traded off between my hot ride and the parents' minivan for family fairness.)

Graced with aggressive, modern lines, the Q50 draws looks on the Pennsylvania highway, the wide greenhouse providing vast visibility without compromising proportions. The powerful V-6 engine glides through seven gears accompanied by rumblings from an exclusive Red Sport 400 dual exhaust.

With beautifully quilted white (not family friendly) leather (surprisingly FF) and intuitive controls, discovering the interior of the Q50 is easy. The lack of a good phone spot and no adaptive cruise (requiring a $2,700 optional package) are the only wrinkles in an otherwise comfortable cabin.

Different modes provide distinct driving experiences, with “Eco” too restrained for highway accelerations but “Standard” excellent and the two Sport modes loads of fun. Fuel economy was surprisingly poor at 21.8 MPG over 1,000 miles even with (admittedly sporadic use of) Eco, but the fuel tank is enormous, providing a nearly 500-mile range.

The Infiniti Q50 is one good (small family) ride for the non-minivan set.
