I’ve long advocated for the normalization of electric vehicles, and the 2020 Hyundai Kona EV delivers. The Kona EV looks the same as the 4-cylinder variation, making the EV simply a powertrain option. And it’s a darn good one, with 258 miles of range and 201 horses happy to provide instant torque from the 150-kilowatt electric motor.

The Hyundai Kona was named 2019 North American Utility of the Year with good reason. It’s an ideal size for singles or small families with room for five and storage in the back. The quiet cabin is well-appointed, with weighty switches and well-placed knobs. The Limited includes heated and ventilated seats, limiting the use of HVAC for battery preservation.

I don’t love the whirring noise EVs make. “Auntie, the car sounds haunted,” my niece remarked. A discreet chime when reversing alerts pedestrians at low speed.

I recorded 4.9 miles per kilowatt-hour, above the 3.7 mi/kWh EPA rating and I wasn’t trying to hyper-mile. Trickle charging (on 110-volt outlet) averaged 80 miles/12 hours but install a Level 2 charger at home if possible. The Hyundai Kona EV is sold in 11 states so check the OEM link below for availability and federal tax credits.
