The Genesis GV80 will be a welcome and long-awaited addition to the Genesis showroom when it arrives in summer 2020. The GV80 design language embodies “athletic luxury,” a tag line I prefer to the “young luxury” the brand is using.
Attention to detail shows in the GV80. The leather is soft and supple, with beautiful quilting throughout, including the door panels and seat covers. The first and second rows feature open pore soft wood, solid switches and knobs, and an overall feeling of spacious modernity.
The round shift knob is plexiglass, an opportunity for upgrading at full production. A handwriting recognition pad facilitates interfacing with the infotainment system.
The GV80 manages to fit a good-sized third row seat while providing a sleek, sloping roofline, no small feat of design and engineering. At a media event in Miami, head designer Luc Donckerwolke told me, “It was every millimeter. We worked millimeter by every millimeter to get the style and seating.”
Engine choices consist of either a 2.5 or 3.5-liter. Rear-wheel-drive is standard with an all-wheel option and a host of advanced safety features stock.
The GV80 may be late to the luxury SUV party, but it’s wearing a stunningly beautiful dress.
