As I approach the all-new Nissan Sentra, it’s captivating even bathed in California’s weak winter sun. With a large grill and angles executed with a snap, the four-door compact sedan is modern and timeless. Inside, the dash is ergonomically friendly with pleasantly easy controls save for an awkwardly-placed start button.

Adjusting the driver’s seat is simple and visibility is excellent with the windscreen casting minimal glare. Acceleration from the 149-horsepower 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine is good if not aggressive, and the CVT’s whine is blessedly minimal. On the road, the Sentra is quiet and refined, with steady, appealing steering weight and solid, reassuring brake feel.

Nissan Safety Shield® 360 technology is standard and provided non-intrusive audio and haptic inputs. Android Auto and Apple CarPlay both worked well and the large 7” screen displayed information clearly. The switches, buttons and surfaces have a premium feel. The large center console features a huge bin and a handy place for a phone with multiple USB ports, but wireless charging isn’t available. The seats were comfortable over the course of two hours of driving.

Overall, the Sentra is an excellent compact, ideal for smaller households. It will brighten up any commute.
