The Volvo V60 Cross Country wagon is a lovely alternatively to an SUV. The four-door, two-row, five-seater is AWD, provides a soothing, Swedish interior, and all the safety equipment one expects from Volvo.

Ride and handling are smooth and confident, with responsive steering and sharp, sure-footed braking. There are 4 different drive modes accessible via a shiny center-console roll with the everyday “Comfort” the most enjoyable. The “Eco” mode’s calibration was unpleasant, shifting gears unexpectedly and unevenly. The “Dynamic” mode increased revs and tightened steering but wasn’t a significant difference. “Off road” is for “rough roads,” but I’d prefer a snow/mud mode instead.

The V60 is a sharp-looking, handsome vehicle, with a high belt line and narrow windows. But that profile means visibility is narrowed, which causes an over-reliance on blind-spot monitoring in particular. It’s not a barrier to purchase, but something to be aware of on a test drive.

The V60 handled two inches of snow on an untreated, hilly, twisty road with aplomb, but deeper snow may be an issue due to the wagon’s comparatively low ground clearance. But for everyday ingress and egress, loading and unloading and general livability, the wagon is hard to beat.
