Ingress and egress are effortless, even for my petite stature, and finding a comfortable seating position is straightforward. Large windows afford broad visibility with the drive height benefiting from nearly 9” of ground clearance.
Quality materials grace the Subaru Ascent’s cabin with the chocolate exterior and vanilla interior a delicious if impractical choice for a family or wearer of dark denim. The doors thunk when closing, and switches and levers are weighty. Cargo room is plentiful even with all the seats up.
On the road, the Subaru Ascent is a durable, well-balanced vehicle, with a sure-footed feel thanks in part to standard AWD and a quiet, well-insulated cabin. Road noise is kept to a minimum, even riding on 20” tires. The CVT engine complains on aggressive uphills and can shift too much on the descent, but overall acceleration is excellent for entering the highway or popping away from a stoplight.

The Nissan Frontier midsize pickup gets a newly developed engine for 2020, a precursor to a fully redesigned vehicle coming later this year.
The new powertrain replaces the 152-horsepower four-cylinder and 261-horsepower V6. It also does away with the five-speed manual or automatic transmission choice, swapping out for a nine-speed automatic only. All of these changes vastly simplify the twenty-one different configurations in the 2019 Frontier lineup.
This new engine is specifically tailored for American buyers, focusing on acceleration, torque, and fuel economy. The new transmission will be significantly quieter than the whiny five-speed it replaces.
Inside, all grades of the Frontier get – wait for it – power doors and windows. Yes, you read that correctly. Up until now, the base Frontier had manual crank windows. All trims also get standard push-button start, leather shit knob, and manual tilt steering.
Even with this new engine, the reality is this version of the Frontier is going on its fifteenth year in the marketplace. An all-new Frontier is due to later in 2020 and may be worth the wait.
