Jeeps often draw the eye with strong looks and cool accessories. The 2020 Jeep Gladiator draws even more looks, for very good reason: there hasn’t been a new Jeep pickup since 1987.

The Glad is business in the front, party in the back with a 5-foot bed adding 31” of length versus the Wrangler Unlimited, but it drives small. Affording a particularly high seating position, it’s relatively easy to get into, with well-placed grab bars to assist.

The seats are manual since the roof and doors come off, but it’s easy to find a good seating position. My phone connects seamlessly to the Uconnect system with heated seats and steering wheel ($995) adding welcome modernity in an otherwise reassuringly classic interior.

My test Gladiator sports the standard 3.6L V-6, growling to life with the push-button start. The manual six-speed tranny’s been tragically swapped for a $2,000 optional 8-speed automatic. Cruising pandemic-quiet streets, the Jeep Gladiator is comfortable, smooth and engaging. At highway speeds, it’s loud given the faux roof, not suitable for long, serious phone conversations. But if you’re buying the Glad for a rolling office, you’re doing it wrong anyway. Hang up and enjoy the ride.
