The Ford Escape is a perennial favorite over more than twenty years of production. The latest version is a stylish compact crossover with a lower door line and larger windows for improved visibility. While it may be more carlike, it still offers a higher ride height than a sedan.
The Escape has a 3-cylinder, 1.5 liter EcoBoost engine standard, but upgrade to the 4-cylinder 2.0-liter version with auto stop-start if budget allows for a smoother, more enjoyable driving experience. Both engines utilize an eight-speed automatic transmission. Front wheel drive is standard, but all-wheel-drive adds improved traction in a variety of driving conditions. The Escape also offers a 2.5-liter 4-cylinder hybrid with a CVT engine. The hybrid is an excellent option if fuel economy is a key reason for purchase and is a similar driving experience to the 2.0-liter gas engine. A plug-in hybrid is in the works, too.
The interior is well designed and well-appointed. The second row seats slide and recline, providing added functionality. The Escape is an obedient, easy vehicle to drive. It’s not a sports car by any means, but it serves as a reliable, durable, dependable companion for small households and all types of drivers.
