Redesigning the legendary Corvette is a go big or go home moment for the Chevy team, and with the latest version, the team went big. Risking alienating the traditional front-engine purists, Chevy created the C8 with a mid-engine design, fulfilling the dream of Zora Arkus-Duntov, Corvette's Enzo Ferrari.
The C8 Stingray’s proportions reflect mid-engine, with a short front end and a wide, muscular hockey butt, accommodating necessary cooling air vents. The exterior is almost overwrought, closer to Lamborghini than Ferrari.
The interior features a sleek two-spoke flat top and bottom steering wheel, the first two-spoke since 1984. The modern interior isn't just driver oriented; it's heavily driver focused to the extreme, giving the passenger a sidecar feel. The thick, button-festooned center stack is polarizing.
A newer version of the LT1 - cleverly, the LT2 - naturally aspirated 6.2-liter V-8 engine with double clutch tranny powers the Stingray, but manual drivers must settle for paddle shifters. The exhaust note remains an engaging and satisfying high point.
Driving impressions will be forthcoming. In the interim, look for plenty of reactions from the automotive paparazzi, papacy and prognosticators, myself included, in the coming months. Production starts at Bowling Green, KY in late 2019.
