Ingress and egress are effortless, even for my petite stature, and finding a comfortable seating position is straightforward. Large windows afford broad visibility with the drive height benefiting from nearly 9” of ground clearance.
Quality materials grace the Subaru Ascent’s cabin with the chocolate exterior and vanilla interior a delicious if impractical choice for a family or wearer of dark denim. The doors thunk when closing, and switches and levers are weighty. Cargo room is plentiful even with all the seats up.
On the road, the Subaru Ascent is a durable, well-balanced vehicle, with a sure-footed feel thanks in part to standard AWD and a quiet, well-insulated cabin. Road noise is kept to a minimum, even riding on 20” tires. The CVT engine complains on aggressive uphills and can shift too much on the descent, but overall acceleration is excellent for entering the highway or popping away from a stoplight.

The all-new 2019 Audi Q3 luxury compact crossover is like a good pair of leopard print mules: stylish, comfortable, conquering day into night with sophisticated ease. The Q3 conquers big box stores and posh small boutiques in similar style.
The Q3 is large enough to seat four adults (or five good friends) with generous room for cargo. It’s not so big that it feels superfluous when driving alone; it’s right-sized for singles and smaller households. The exterior mimics Audi’s larger SUVs nicely.
The 2019 version is wider, longer, and taller than its predecessor and Quattro AWD is standard. The 2.0-liter engine powers 228 horses with an 8-speed transmission. Driving is flawless fun, with tight, responsive steering and a smooth, dynamic suspension. It’s quick off the line, the compact size adroitly dodging traffic, but not so small that it feels undersized on the highway. All-around visibility is excellent.
The interior is quiet and comfortable, with a highly functional digital dashboard featuring the latest in infotainment technology. The materials are luxurious throughout, with fun Alcantara suede accents available in the Orange package.
The Premium Plus trim ($37,800) leaves room for shoe shopping in the budget. The Prestige ($42,900) has all the goodies.
